Just 30 minutes from the beaches of Marbella, the Sierra de las Nieves feels like a different world. Spain's newest national park — and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — is a landscape of ancient pine forests, limestone peaks and rocky singletrack that mountain bikers from all over Europe are starting to discover. If you've only ever ridden the coastal roads, this is going to change your view of what Marbella has to offer.
What's the Riding Like?
The Sierra offers a mix of purpose-built trails and natural mountain paths. You'll find long fireroad climbs that reward you with technical descents through the pines, sweeping views across the coast and the kind of trails that make you glad you brought your mountain bike on holiday.
The terrain is rocky in places — this isn't a place for road bikes — but the trails are well-graded and suitable for intermediate riders upwards. Beginners can enjoy the lower trails and forest paths without tackling the more technical sections.
Key Trails to Know
- Pinsapar Trail — a beautiful ride through ancient Spanish fir trees, unique to this park
- Los Quejigales Loop — a classic 35km circuit with big views and a mix of surfaces
- Torrecilla descent — for experienced riders, a challenging descent from the park's highest peak
Getting There
The Sierra is easily accessed from San Pedro de Alcántara. Head north on the A-7176 towards Igualeja or take the road up to El Burgo. Both approaches offer great riding from the off. If you'd rather not ride the tarmac approach, you can drive up and start in the park itself.
What to Bring
- A proper mountain bike — hardtail minimum, full suspension recommended for the technical stuff
- Helmet (obviously), gloves and knee pads for the descents
- Plenty of water and food — there are no cafes in the park itself
- A trail map or GPS — mobile signal can be patchy
- Layers — it's cooler in the mountains than on the coast, and weather changes quickly
